Many years ago, I read the book 'The Intellectual Life' by Fr. Sertillanges, first published in 1921. The book offers many practical ideas about retaining and developing ideas, but one of the best pieces of advice it offered me was to keep a notebook next to my bed for ideas that invariably crop up in the middle of the night. Rather than anxiously worrying that the bright ideas that come to mind in the darkness of the night might be lost, just write them down. I've found it to be a helpful suggestion, especially since then I don't have to worry about forgetting that which I was hoping to remember. One need not be an intellectual to have good ideas worth writing done and having a quick place to do it makes all the difference.
